Also, the “hugging” is something assistant gunners do (called A-gunners) with machine gunners. That is a scout-sniper team though, so the “hugger” is the scout. I’d imagine for the same purposes, helps control recoil, and in the insanity of a firefight and a loud gun going off nearby, it’s easy to tap on their helmet to get their attention, point out and prioritize targets, help them brace for recoil, assist with clearing jams, reloads, etc. usually in two man teams like this, the scout or the a gunner or scout is the more senior and competent member.

Our rules of engagement (ROE) said you have to have positive identification (PID) before you can shoot at people. Basically, we have to confirm he’s the bad guy (e.g; we’re watching him shoot at us, or one guy definitely saw it was him that shot at us.
There was always a squad (8-13 guys) on stand by for stuff like this, called Quick Reaction Force (QRF). We usually rotated something like 9 hrs patrol, 9 hrs post (standing in a tower along the perimeter of the base) and 9 hrs rest/QRF. That way we never “switched shifts” at predictable times. We would also randomly change “shift” length between, 7,9, and 11 hrs.
Well the QRF didn’t find the guy because no one ever saw him specifically in the first place. The local Afghan National Police (ANP) then went out to look for the guy and found “the suspect” within no time, making me believe he wasn’t actually the guy.
The ANP is unbelievably corrupt and made up of the most inbred idiots ever. There were a few exceptions, but not many. We had 2 ANP shoot themselves on accident in a day window. Think about a group of inbred 14-19 yr olds from 1900’s West Virginia with no education and a penchant for kidnapping and raping random men, and bidding on who gets to rape the child brought to the their tea parties. Now picture their Muslim, and from Afghanistan. Now give them all the authority in the world over a war torn populace. THAT is the ANP. At least it was when I was there a decade ago.
Since I’m reminiscing, I will mention Lt. Dawood of the ANP. He originally started with the Afghan Border Patrol. The guy had more American awards for Valor than any Marine I met. I worked closely with him for a time, he was a highly motivated Taliban hunter and truly cared about his country and people.
