I'm an avid reader, but ignored politics and books like 1984 for too long. I need to catch up on this. I am trying to remember another book, along the lines of 1984, but it explores the thought of self imprisonment thru our own weakness and desires.

Anything will be helpful. Maybe we can get a conservative library list going. I also like to know how the "enemy" thinks, so titles that are outside the box are appreciated, too

Read their bible: https://www.bard.edu/library/arendt/pdfs/Marx-CommunistManifesto.pdf Fun game is see which parts they've already enacted here, what they're proposing and tell me the DNC isn't the Communist Party. Conservative list is start with the basics. Read your classical economists, austrian economists, letters between Jefferson and Madison. For fiction you could always read Atlas Shrugged, there's lots of good material out there.
