What's the relevance to time travel? The monolith in the ape scene reflects an paradigm shift in cognitive ability "gifted" by something higher through the monolith. The ape shortly after they find the monolith figures out that a bone can be used as a weapon, then the jump cut to him throwing the bone to a starship, evoking that the knowledge gained is an evolutionary step that will play out until the next shift.
