You might be new here - being based is that they actually understand what we're about and make solid arguments that fight the insanity that exists from the domestic terrorists in the coalition of the democrats party.

Do you know the etiology of this term?

From the Urban Dictionary Based The quality of having an opinion without regard for what other people think, often a controversial opinion but not always. Upon expressing such an opinion it is customary for others to acknowledge the person as being based.

Fo shizzle my nizzle!

Can't from the crack pandemic where it was first used but then rap and then internet took it and turned it into something positive. Much like we have done with other words in history

EG: Cool Hot Word Ratchet Dope Jerk Tugg Bad Dude Cock Dipstick Gay

I could keep going. There are also other words we just make up over time like for example:

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Peace out gangsta ✌️

Not trying to be a dick, but you seem to have a pretty shaky grasp of the English language to be going around correcting people. Etiology? Commentator?

If I express some curiosity about the origin of a jargon word that has been accepted and is being used in this community, why would you feel threatened by that? I wasn't 'correcting' anyone, just wanted to know how its usage came into being.

Excuse my rude tone.

My point is the word etiology is about the origin and characteristics of a disease. The origin of a word is "etymology". People who participate in online forums are called commenters. Commentators are people who offer live commentary, usually on TV or radio.

Anyway, ask away, not trying to stop you. Welcome to the community.

And to answer your question - the etymology of the word based comes from drug culture, which made its way into rap, which then made its way into political online discussion subcultures.

Based is a reference to freebasing, one method of using crack cocaine. People who freebase (apparently) are so oblivious to the world around them that it's like they don't care what anyone thinks about them.

So some rapper started glorifying that, calling himself based, not in the sense of using that drug, but being so self confident that he didn't need to use the drug to be just as unconcerned with what others think about him.

At a certain point, that idea made its way into political discussions. Anyone who identifies with a niche political philosophy has to get used to being mocked by those in the mainstream. Someone who accepts it, and even welcomes the pushback is therefore based - they don't care what others think of them. They publicly fight against the tide of mainstream culture. They are based.

And now the word has become so common that most don't know or care about the etymology of the word.
