The first national pushback in Presidential politics would be Buchanan and Perot. Perot called out NAFTA. Almost all Republicans claimed “free” trade always benefits both parties, without considering that it’s obviously not that simple if the deals take 1,000s of pages and one country has serfs and slaves doing national bidding. Go back further and it was Richard Nixon who “opened” China, which ultimately meant sending American intellectual property and cash to China in exchange for some corporate profits and nominally cheaper consumer goods (real earnings peaked in the 1970s for the average American man).
Enter Trump and his amazing campaign and victory. A return to looking out for this nation to the extent possible. Negotiate better deals thinking not only of corporate profits but domestic employment. Make America more attractive to employ and invest. And this is the shock not just to the DC swamp but the CCP and parts of the EU. Everyone had already assumed America had bought into globalism and the end of exceptionalism. “Lead from behind” “one of many nations” lie about history apology tours...
And this is why Trump has had to fight almost the entire media, at least 1.5 of the two parties, and almost all entrenched interests.
