Back in the day, people were a lot more dependent on their own minds for thinking. Today most of us have smartphones, laptops, etc.

We have access to a great deal of information rapidly, but our depth of knowledge in most things suffers.

Two hundred years ago, most adults could quote back to you exactly what you said to them hours, days, weeks, or even sometimes years later. Memory was important and with that memory came in-depth analysis of politics for our founding fathers.

Nature and nurture both impact memory. Much like nature and nurture impact physical strength. Some people are gifted with great inherent memory, like some are gifted with great natural strength.

Nurture is also critical though. If you don't train strength or memory, neither will be strong as they could be. Electronic aids make it less necessary to develop a strong memory.

A barely literate apprentice blacksmith in the 1700's likely had a better memory than most physicists today, because he needed that memory.

A post earlier today had a bunch of quotes attributed to Thomas Jefferson. He didn't write those. Whether Samuel Adams is actually the one who said all these or not is much less important than remembering the philosophy of this era, the spirit of '76. Their verbiage is clunky, exact quotes aren't even the point. The concepts sure are, and will guide us well.

I was re-reading The Declaration of Independence for inspiration recently, and it appears Jefferson concurs with Adams here.

Just look at this passage and think of today. It’s like Jefferson is speaking directly to us almost 250 years later. It truly feels like we are on the verge of the next American Revolution:

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
