My mom was the same, from Turkey. I will never forget being a PhD student at UCLA back in the mid-'80s and she and I had stopped at a gas station. The owner was an older Asian man who spoke with an accent. My mom was a very striking foreign woman, so he started chatting with her as I pumped gas. When he found out she was Turkish, he burst into tears, grabbed her hands and began kissing them, saying "Thank you! Thank you!! Turkish soldiers...very brave, save my country!!"

Turns out, he was S. Korean, and it's true: the Turkish contingent routinely skull-fucked the Norks by sneaking over the lines into their camps in the middle of the night and slitting their troops' throats while they slept. The Turkish soldier who could bring back the most Nork trophy ears threaded on a cord, would win. This freaked them out so bad that they complained to the UN to force the Turks to be withdrawn from combat. The Turks were puzzled since they thought fighting was the reason they were there; and demoralization of the enemy is the quickest way to win.

Last thing as we got in the car, was that fellow telling my mom that the most popular radio tune during the war was a Turkish song. And so, there he was, that li'l ol' Korean man, standing next to his gas pump in Long Beach, CA, 1985, singing "Üsküdara Gideriken" to my mom. He still knew the words after 30+ years, and when my mom began singing it with him, he was so deeply thrilled. Koreans never forget their debts of gratitude. My mom's gone, but I still have that memory.

There's a reason why Turkish Muslim savages massacred 1.5 Armenian Christians.
