Democrats support this. Biden's staff and Democrats in Congress have said they support this. They stated their reasoning. They are furious that big tech has not done enough to censor conservatives during the election. Conservatives were running rampant with election interference misinformation according to them, and they need to be silenced.

If anyone thinks I'm joking or making this up, I'm not. Beware

Rusty911 30 points ago +30 / -0

I believe you, it's part of their gaslighting strategy. Let's censor all the conservatives, and then fake outrage that they WEREN'T being censored. CLOWN REALITY

So, I think you're missing the point. They're going to remove the protections of Section 230. So, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will still exist, they just won't be able to censor people any more. After their Rule 230 protections are removed, if they censor you, you'll be able to sue them and put them out of business.

Trump_in_2020_Pedes 2 points ago +3 / -1

There's only one protection offered by Rule 230. It prevents you from filing suit against the content provider. (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) The assumption was that the content provider would act as a "platform", and not censor content, and not be liable for the content published. Instead, they censor people, and can't be sued. They're acting as a publisher, not a platform.

Your solution does not work, just so we're clear. If you hold the content providers liable for what the people say, then they go out of business, or they censor content.

0
Trump_in_2020_Pedes 0 points ago +1 / -1

There is only one protection in Section 230. It prevents the internet companies from being sued for publishing something that might be false/defamatory. That's the only reason Section 230 exists.

3
FightTheSWAMP 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yeah the only "bipartisan" support is on this topic, but for very different reasons. Democrats do not think free speech is acceptable. They are upset Trump and his supporters are able to have a voice/platform. Conservatives are rightfully upset with the hypocrisy and censorship of one party. I love Trump and I damn sure believe these companies should be held accountable and Sec 230 is bullshit as is... I am scared of repealing it though. It seems like FB and Twitter are each ok with Sec 230 being repealed and that should scare everyone on the right. The left can't compete with the right on merits, therefore the only option is to deny them the ability to communicate with the voters.

It’s sounds very familiar, in the UK the BBC has been attacked by the conservatives saying they are corrupt and are run by Neo Liberals and the left attack the BBC for broadcasting anything conservative.

Google also has pending antitrust suits against them too.

Twitter, not so much. They're at the moment simply a messaging service where Facebook and Google are literally trying to do everything.

19
Fourtyandfourtyfive 19 points ago +19 / -0

I don’t social network but doesn’t Twitter put some kind of “Trumps lying” note on anything election related?

They need a whippin’ too!!

8
V43_of_ii_dim 8 points ago +8 / -0

True, but I think the point of the antitrust is all of the pies FB and Google have their fingers in, i.e. they are their own advertising agencies on top all of the social and media stuff they do. When it comes to the editorializing of user content, that where the argument for stripping away Section 230 protections comes into play for ALL of them.

4
LoneStarDangler 4 points ago +4 / -0

Facebook managed to piss off both sides of the fence. Conservatives by censoring them, and regressives by not censoring us enough.

Well.

230 doesn't need to be destroyed if we can actually force the courts to properly define it and have it enforced properly.

Checkmate libshits.

54
MamaStew 54 points ago +54 / -0 (edited)

230 protects minds, gab, parler, bitchute, and all the other alt tech sites. The problem isn't 230. The problem is a too loose idea of what 230 protects and no enforcement when social media act like publishers.

36
BirchTBarlow 36 points ago +36 / -0

The idea was to provide an exemption for light moderation so the sites could remove spam, gore, and the like. However, tech companies now claim that reasonable opinions fall in the same category.

In other words, enforce the laws on the books. Which is a struggle for Democrats, always. They just demand new laws, so they can slip poison pills in.

We could have closed borders - if the existing laws were enforced.

We'd have fair elections - if existing laws were enforced.

We'd have far less abuse of lobbies - if the existing laws were enforced.

We'd have far less campaign finance abuse - if existing laws were enforced.

I could go on.

TD is a forum, not a public square.

1
deleted 1 point ago +1 / -0
1
Spartv2 1 point ago +1 / -0

private forums have mods that can delete shit. public squares are not supposed to have that. a public square is basically what the name implies, a public square. It may be digital, but in theory, it should have the protections that our constitution guarantees us. In practice, it currently does not.

1
FireannDireach 1 point ago +1 / -0

Private forum, different laws governing it. It's not illegal to tell a unwashed little turd from the underbelly of the internet to fuck off, and revoke their right to post, if they violate the rules. A public square is a different jurisdiction and set of laws. I'd believe deporting trolls would fall under the concept of a store reserving the right to refuse to do business with anyone.

4
BeefyBelisarius 4 points ago +4 / -0

Classify them as a common carrier, like a phone company.

3
Lovepede 3 points ago +3 / -0

I remember when the 230 talks began. It wasn't about repealing the law. It was about not letting the social media companies hide behind it when they acted as content moderators and censor their organic content to create a story or sell a political narrative.

Repealing for those who abuse it is perhaps best left up to the courts as an enforcement of regulation. Section 230 protection is their defense when Breitbart sues them for hiding them from search results or NY Post sues them for deleting a link to their article. The courts merely need to say section 230 protection do not apply and let the lawsuits proceed.

Alex Jones broke no law, and was deleted from all platforms in a coordinated fashion. If the courts have balls, AJ should get a sizeable chunk of the tech companies in litigation - his livelihood was sacrificed for political reasons.

Cledus 3 points ago +3 / -0

I think the Big Techs should be required to form some sort of charter where they declare they're a publisher or a platform. Seems like that would make enforcement of the existing law a lot easier.

2
Dtom13 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'd never thought of it like that. I think we need 230 reform, not necessarily repealing the entire section. Because as long as a platform takes a reasonable attempt to remove terrorism or threats, illegal shit then they can't be liable for every single thing that a user posts. Now what is "reasonable" is up to interpretation of course. Maybe it depends on the judge.

6
shade1k 6 points ago +6 / -0

This is most likely the source of the ire, and antitrust is the hammer they have available to threaten with. One conservative group still on Facebook = Facebook is 100% haram. It's a big own-goal, if true, though. People might start to remember that antitrust is a thing.

8
MikeyLeeRay 8 points ago +8 / -0

Not to be a doomer but isn't that just a repeat of what happened to Microsoft? And they seem to still be doing fine, I could be wrong. But companies that big seem to just shrug off the government.

Facebook wants to bundle Communism in your conversations with grandma

5
FuqSpez 5 points ago +5 / -0

Looking back on it now it seems like a retarded reason for an antitrust suit.

2
OrangePill 2 points ago +2 / -0

It was extraordinarily stupid and if the same precedents were held today for Google and Apple for their mobile apps and operating systems things would be very different.

I get the feeling it was Clinton intimidation directed at Gates to push him to join them or see how much of a hell the government could make life for him and his company.

I don't see this as being a positive unless they're going to shut down FaceBook completely.

I see this as being a tool to add more censorship and restrictions of free speech. They'll get slapped because they're not doing ENOUGH to get rid of 'extremists' and 'undesirables'. Like that one cunt in the senate hearing was upset because Twitter and FaceBook haven't done enough to shut Trump up. That shit left me actually speechless to hear that. Like, wow. This is how far we've sunken. This is how childish our politicians are. They want MORE censorship and banning.

And for what? Because people don't believe the election was valid? No shit, it's not valid. Look around. It's pretty transparent for anyone to see. People questioning the election process damages the country? No, it's the election process that damages the company. Not the questioning of it. It's these 11th hour changes to voting that weren't adopted as law or amended in the state constitution that hurts confidence.

I don't give a fuck what happens, Biden will never be seen as a legit president. Ever. And no matter what, anything he says will be ignored by over 80 million people. This makes America look so bad to the world. The world knows he stole it. You think they're going to respect someone like Biden? They're not. But I can tell you that they respect Trump. Because he earned their respect. I honestly wonder if Biden comprehends that? That he's not going to be treated seriously by the world or his own country. I would seriously pay good fucking money to see him heckled at public appearances or have an actually honest journalist just berate the fuck out of him with questions. Yeah, he'll get escorted out, but it'd make Biden look like the fucking clown he is.

We seriously need to consider invoking the Insurrection Act and locking all this shit down until we figure out what the fuck happened. It's going to look bad. It's going to look REAL bad. But this might be the only way. Lock the government down with the Insurrection Act. Scare the FUCK out them. Then tell them in no uncertain terms that we're gonna get to the bottom of this election fuckery, no matter how long it takes. If it turns out the President lost, then alright. Insurrection Act lifted and Trump walks. But IF it turns out that Biden cheated, tribunals get set up and heads begin to roll. And we WILL find you. And you WILL face judgement. If you don't want your head on the chopping block when the time comes, it's in their best interests to step forward right now, because the door is closing. These fucking pieces of shit don't remember what fear is. They need to be reminded of it. They need to understand that it's not a bluff.

Democrats think we're just going to whine then go away. That we're not going to do anything about it. Because they think they hold the cards. Invoke the Insurrection Act. Show them this shit isn't a fucking game and we're not bluffing. We're going to smoke them out and if they're not on our side, they're our fucking enemy that needs to be put down. Democrats threaten riots. Republicans need to threaten civil war and follow through on that threat.

2
grndmrshlgando 2 points ago +2 / -0

the mask is completely off. the democrat party is literally just a full blown tyrannical communist party, punishing american citizens and killing them in some cases. let not forget about the mass graves in new york. the question is why is it being allowed to happen? I know we got trump and the military but how much longer do we have to get tyrannized like this

It is the one conservatives do really well on and the one most normal people are likely to use. It's not a space the leftists dominate and are always screaming for more censorship on.

Nuking it is likely an overall tactical mistake in decreasing the connectivity of the likely largest conservative communication and info sharing(censored as it may be) network

My one account won't hurt them but it sure made me feel good. If I had a twitter account, I would have deleted it as well. Dumped my Reddit account when this one went live a year ago.
