They needed a way to do damage limitation, so:
They released a batch of harmless emails and attached fake Russian fingerprints so they could blame Russia and use Russia as a distraction from all the corruption and evil revealed in the Podesta emails.
As it turns out, the fake 'Russian malware' they used was actually Ukrainian malware, so they messed up.
Also, IIRC they messed up again because when they tried to create the fake persona 'Guccifer 2.0' they accidentally left Warren Flood's signature in the forensic data, and Flood was a DNC employee, if I remember correctly.
Feel free to correct me if I've remembered any of these details not quite perfectly.
