Dogs can kind of do calculus. Calculus is math on rates of change, like change in position. If you throw a ball off a dock, there is a combination of running and swimming for the dog to get the ball. The fastest path will require some amount of running and some amount of swimming. Dog brains can figure out a path pretty close to what calculus would predict as the optimal amount of running and swimming.
