It's because in their fucked up religion recognizing your faults (as a white person, mostly male) and bending over backwards to lick the asshole of any and all people who believe (truly or otherwise) you and/or your ancestors have wronged them, means that you're awake. I.E. no longer sleeping through all the racial, sexual, etc. injustice.
