Actually, the Founding Fathers despised democracies. They all knew that democracies ALWAYS end in MOB rule. And that is why they used the term DEMOCRACY exactly ZERO times in the founding documents.
The ONLY body in the Federal Government that was originally designed to be filled by democratic populate vote was the House of Representatives. Not the Judicial branch. Not the President. And, many do now KNOW this... NOT the Senate. Prior to the horribly flawed 17th Amendment (passed in the early 20th century) each state could choose their Senators however they wanted and it was typically done by appointment from state legislatures.
The idea was simple - the House would be the voice of the people, complete with all kinds of populace-driven demands that were good, bad, and just plain ugly. The SENATE was the voice of REASON. The SENATE was designed to slow down the less educated and more easily manipulated House.
But, the 17th Amendment turned the Senate into the Voice of the People 2.0... with longer terms of service and more arcane rules. It has been downhill ever since.
Now.. lose the Electoral College and it truly will be game over.
We live in a representational republic, not a democracy. The electoral college is a safeguard to prevent the "tyranny of the majority" that destroys most pure democracies.
Also, we are a federation (republic) of states, which is a very resilient decentralized form of government. We have no national or federal elections per se, they are the sum total of 50 individual state elections, etc.
The founding fathers were definitely stable geniuses...
