China was rarely ever united in a traditional sense its history. The various regions have disputes going back centuries and longer. Anytime one region rose to prominence and subjugated the others. Brutality was often the regular resort to suppress dissent and unrest in those territories.
China is more like a collection of 6+ nations held together by the brutality and Tyranny of the ruling regime/region.
