Having been a part of this from the true start way back then, it's hilarious how such a simple mistake years ago ended up creating an army that tore down all their daft plans. They just couldn't help themselves.
It isn't so much that they couldn't help themselves, but that their ideology demands absolute control over all culture. They can't allow "side groups", because those are potential enemies.
There is a reason why the Left employs things like "reeducation camps". They simply cannot allow anyone to have an opposing viewpoint. It is incompatible with leftist social engineering.
Their mistake was likely timing. They hadn't corrupted all of culture enough to go after gamers yet. The slow and steady approach has served the Left very well, but a couple of things have forced them to accelerate their plans. The first was the Tea Party movement, and the second was the MAGA movement and Trump (which are connected to the original Tea Party movement).
Following the rise of the Tea Party in 2009 and 2010, the Left starting attacking all areas of culture. They (correctly) understood the whole basis for that populist movement was that American culture did not jive with what they were trying to accomplish, and the changes they made had been too slow to prevent an uprising.
Contrast things in 2009 with things now, merely 11 years later, and you can see the incredible shift in everything from speech to attitudes towards just about anything. Yes, most of the cultural changes are on the surface and most people think the same, but most people are also afraid to voice their actual opinions now. That was not true in the 2000s and before.
This is why socialist/communist societies have to have full censorship. Their shitty ideas can't compete with freedom and truth.
Don’t forget Occupy Wall Street. Together with the Tea Party/Ron Paul movement, these were two ends of the spectrum honing in for a blistering attack on the failures of Neoliberalism in the wake of the ‘08 Great Recession.
Occupy was very much a traditional leftist movement with an economic class focus. That dangerous focus on corporate priviledge was succesfully sidelined for the left with the heavy push towards intersectional identity politics. All the tranny issues popped up out of nowhere, BLM in 2015, corporate chief diversity officers, Goldman Sachs pride floats, etc. The activist left was defanged against the oligarchy.
The strategy against the right seemed to be a long grind of cultural alienation, which worked for a while but encountered a huge setback with gamer gate, emerging independent media figures like Joe Rogan, Shapiro, Sargon of Akkad, Jordan Peterson was thrust into publicity in ‘15 and became a rockstar, the Great Meme War, all culminating in the rise of Donald Trump. What a long, strange trip it’s been.

Timing was wrong, but their hand was indeed forced at the start, then it appears to me like they lost control of their culture-war foot-soldiers who started going way too hard in areas that hadn't been subverted enough yet to accept their sweeping demands for change.
Like you, I've long been of the opinion that Tea Party, then soon after that the confusing mire that was OWS forced acceleration that lead to the harder push into casual culture. They found their feet quite well again soon after in many areas, but gamers resisted to a degree so severe even I didn't anticipate as one of them, that it forced them to dramatically overplay their hands. That event, in my opinion, is what prepared the meme army that was at the core of the online MAGA movement. Two solid years of fighting online had us sharp for when the same tricks started being played on Trump. I don't think places like The_Donald would have thrived like they did without that warmup round.
A lot of my perspective is probably just nostalgia and fog of war, not seeing the grander things in play, but I can't help but think one of our greatest assets in the last 6 years have been all the pissed off internet dwellers who were told their opinions were wrong and they didn't matter.
The left still have succeeded in shifting the overton window, however. The change I've seen in people I grew up with in the 90s who had the edgiest, most offensive humor imaginable are now completely spineless, afraid to offend anyone leftists drones. It's remarkable just how well they shifted culture in their favor, simply with consistent propaganda. It all seems so obvious to me, but to those that never participated in any of these 'battles', it works incredibly well.
GamerGate is the biggest mistake the left ever made. Before GamerGate happened, most young people thought the right-wing was exclusively the side in favor of censorship and moral authoritarianism (although a decent amount still do). People thought feminists were a small minority that wouldn't ever make an impact so people mainly shat on the Christian right.
After GamerGate though, a lot of young people realized the left may be just as bad as the boogeyman Christian conservatives they had thought were the ones with a hate boner for all the things they loved. So from 2014-2016 or so, the GamerGate crowd decided the left was pretty much just as bad. After Trump's election though and the unbelievable shitshow with the media, they finally realized that not only is the left worse about censorship and moral authoritarianism, but that right-wing censorship and moral authoritarianism can't even shake a stick at how extreme those tendencies are on the left.
And now, from 2016-2020, Donald Trump, extreme woke ideology/feminism, and GamerGate accomplished what the Bush era Republicans utterly failed at and that's that they made being right-wing the cool and rebellious thing to do.
We are the underdogs now fighting censorship, authoritarianism, and the establishment. If American history is anything to go off of, we are going to win this fight.

MGGA. It's our ability to stare at a screen for hours on end and navigate the Wild Wild West that most American's will never understand. Those plebs thought they could steal an election by censoring Trump on twitter. I haven't touched a game since election day and I haven't missed a damn thing concerning the election. This has already brought me more satisfaction than any shitty game title, sports, tv, or movie ever will. It's been a grind.. and I fucking love grinds. We still have work to do, but I think today was a pivotal point.
One day we will sit on our porches with Ol' Glory flying high and tell our grandkids how you witnessed and helped expose the greatest political scandal that not only America, but the entire world has ever seen... and still kick their ass in video games.
