This wouldn't start a war, although an economic, cyber and diplomatic global conflict would ensue where each nation is forced to pick a side. And the only scenario where the US unilaterally settles the debt via lawsuits,etc would be if the US and China completely decoupled.

Correct, but it needs - some- amount of people to keep the gears turning. Its pretty obvious that covid became their (most recent) excuse to cull the population and route our dissidents. Famine is a little trickier for them to manage due to all the corruption in their food systems. Epoch had some news on this months back.
China's economy is anything but closed. Their corporations are doing business all over the world.
They have a closed capital account. The Yuan isn’t freely exchanged. It’s a fiat currency of a fiat currency. This is how they manipulate its value. Everything flows through dollars.

China , with its huge population, does not produce enough on its own to survive( esp food)
An American farmer does not accept a Chinese yuan in exchange for soybeans for example
So therefore China had to export their way to get the dollars to buy the food to feed their population. But to compound that, they have to import the raw materials to manufacture the good to export to get dollars, and that require more dollars (to purchase raw materials)
Thus makes them extraordinary sensitive to dollar fluctuations and interest rates, and especially stuff like tariffs. And that is why they have a closed capital account (to manipulate the currency to make sure they are always at a competing advantage to export good so that they can get the dollars to import food and raw materials etc etc)
Trumps tariffs put Chyna in a downward spiral because they could never export enough to get the dollars they needed to buy the stuff they needed to make the stuff they export to get dollars ( and feed their population. )
If the the USA refuses to pay the debt China because of Coronavirus and the election meddling, the CCP implodes overnight.

There is some value and possibly keeping a large debt owed to them, because it is to deterrent for them waging actual HOT war. Essentially if China ever did decide to fire even a single shot America would cancel the debt, and any allies that were involved would arguably cancel theirs as well.
But modifying the existing debt is certainly an interesting opportunity. I have no doubt that Trump is considering it. he is too damn smart to let good opportunities pass him up but he is also clever enough to use them at the best opportunities.

The United States will almost certainly never eradicate our debt with China, or refuse to pay it. There are many reasons why that will not happen, the primary one is that that would destroy our financial legitimacy with the rest of the world. Don't get me wrong, I will happily be proven wrong about this, but I seriously doubt it.
I don't know to what extent people understand the nature of the "debt". The debt is much more similar to stock issued by companies. We don't exactly borrow money from China, as much as China invests in America. It's not some sort of antagonistic relationship at that level. Strangely enough, and in so many ways, China is heavily invested in the further success of America.
China buys US bonds, because they are incredibly secure. Again, if you already understand all of this, and you still think that America is going to wipe the debt clean, I would love to know why you think we're going to do that?
