The word translated as "meek" is πραεῖς (praǘs). Strong's Concordance 4239 notes "Biblical meekness is not weakness but rather refers to exercising God's strength under His control"
Thus, everyone's reading that wrong. In English, because it's about controlled power, would be "blessed are those who use their gifts for the will of God, for they inherit the Earth".
Of course, it takes a lot of words to render "πραεῖς" in English, but I think it's better than the common misconception.
