Yep, my Volvo S80 has about 350lb-ft of torque from 1500~4500RPM and I frequently haul lumber in it. I think I have a cracked turbo housing or head gasket leak, though... coolant found its way into the exhaust :-( Fixing it myself in the garage built by hauling stuff in that poor car.
I also have an XC90 T8. It's a hybrid, but that was just because it was the fastest model - 400HP, ~450lb-ft of torque practically from a stand-still. Treat it like a luxury work truck, decked out in rubber, most seats folded flat to use the back area for storage... averaging nearly 30MPG for the 40,000 miles my wife and I put on it so far... yeah, that's better than a pickup truck in most ways... I can rent a Home Depot pickup if I need to haul something tall that can't be laid on its side.
The tall part is a problem. My local welding gas supplier won't allow me to exchange large bottles if I show up in a car or SUV. Telling them that the truck is having BoogArmor welded to it does not help.
Stick or auto? Seems like only the foreign car makers are offering the manual transmissions these days ...I hate the fact that nobody is US makes manual transmissions on regular vehicles anymore. I drove one for 11 years and I do miss it, sometimes.
