edit: also, the manufacturers are correct. Modern CVTs are more efficient than you rowing your own gears. To their credit, the largest expense for most vehicles is fuel costs. But they are not as reliable as manual transmissions, and they take control out of your hands. Not worth it to me for an extra few MPGs.
