on a Cessna like the one the JFK Jr had, the cowling is a pain in the ass to remove - a lot of fasteners to release. Most guys just check the oil through a tiny hole, pull a little on the alternator belt through a hole in the nose, sump the fuel tanks for water, that sort of thing.
I have never seen anyone remove the cowl and look at the engine for a routine flight
