I like that the bear seems to be struggling a bit to hold the gun, showing that it's heavy. This subtle detail makes the gun more realistic.

This is why cheesy 80s sci-fi and horror films tend to just "feel" better, they had to make the prop, and had something to interact with beside a tennis ball on a stick.

Exactly.

There still are movies that use practical effects because they still look much better. And, contrary to popular belief, practical effects are not more expensive than computer generated crap.

Movies with great practical effects are for example the last Mad Max, Nolan's Batmans, and even the remake of The Thing.
