The thing about the AZ call as a signal is, why not just call them and tell them to pause? Why do it that way? It's easier just to call. Even call with a code so no one will know if someone is listening. The AZ thing just doesn't make sense.

That pollster seemed extra suspicious and pompous when then rolled him out to explain his call, something about his response to calling it screamed that he was in on something.
