Grass roots and alternative media got their growth from thumbing their noses to ‘the narrative’, so media needed a way to fight back and preserve their perceived ‘infallability’, so they got ‘fact checkers’ (just journos, oftentimes from the very networks they protect) to play the same game back but with the guise of being a “third party” who is “impartial”.
They allowed massive consolidation in the space, Its now virtually impossible to NOT use big tech. Amazon is a Natural Monopoly its essentially a branch of US post office and a universal login as is facebook, apple, google.
So essentially we all have to submit fealty 1-4 corporate families and thats it. FCC did this. Each one of those families consumed 100s if not 1000s of near competitors.
unfortunately, we did. The mindless drones that are addicted to scrolling through newsfeeds eavesdropping on our "friends" to see what dumb shit they are posting, signing up for their services in the billions.

We gave them permission at the beginning of muh covid because its super duper scary and we needed authoritarian sources to tell us what to believe. Now they're never going to let go of those authoritarian powers and will continue to censor and discredit everything they don't want people to see. What is done about it is for Trump to decide.
