At that time they wanted to convince Americans to go to war, so multiple newspapers started switching to outright propaganda hidden with an air of objectivity, integrity, and patriotism. They elevated themselves above the other local rags and then the government started using them for messaging.
Make no mistake, the media was always a joke. There are even quotes from Thomas Jefferson saying something being printed in the newspaper means it's probably false. It's just that last century is when the news companies started coordinating to shed that image and pretend they were trustworthy. Before that people looked at news with a more critical eye.
The lie was set in stone in the era of TV with Walter Cronkite, who became "the most trusted man in America". Knowing what we know now, I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA put out that messaging too. Not everything is a conspiracy, but some things are quite obvious in hindsight.
