I'm a somewhat new gun buyer, and I know that you sound like a glowfag and whatnot, but here is my advice:
READ YOUR DAMN GUN LAWS. Yes, the 2A trumps all, but I don't want to see some Fudd (that's you and I) go to jail for being stupid. More often than not, the laws are annoying, but don't prevent you from owning and carrying a gun.
You "need" any gun. The difference between having no gun and having any gun is huge. The different between having the right gun or a good gun and a bad or wrong gun is not as big.
No matter what you buy, you need ammo. Period. You need a lot of it, both for when you need a gun and to practice with it.
You need to practice. Learn how to safely handle the gun. Learn the 4 rules. Practice them. No, I mean, physically pick up your gun (unloaded), and remind yourself of the 4 rules, and practice moving the gun around without flagging anyone, keeping your booger hook of the boom switch, etc... Do it hundreds of times. Muscle memory is key here. Can you move your gun across a room without flagging people? Congratulations, you almost look like a gun pro. Now go to the range and learn to shoot the gun. Get used to it. Eventually, it will become natural. Learn how to shoot quickly and accurately. Train your eyes and hands and body to do what needs to be done to squeeze off accurate rounds. Because your mind will not be part of the equation when you get into your first gunfight!
YOU NEED TO CARRY YOUR GUN WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. Your gun is not just to protect you, but to protect OTHERS in times of danger. You need to be mentally prepared to use that gun, calmly and rationally, when it is needed. My rule is this: I don't reach for my gun unless I plan on firing it, and I won't fire it unless I'd rather go to prison for ten years than not fire it. See? Once I've decided, "Prison is preferable to letting that man live" THEN I reach for the gun, pull it out, and start shooting until the threat is completely eliminated. I do NOT walk around with a gun in my hand, EVER. I do not touch my gun, EVER, unless I am at the range or at home doing dryfire drills, or someone I trust wants a better look at it.
Now, which gun to get?
Handguns are good because you can carry them. START HERE. Carry it ALWAYS. Get a good holster. You need to talk with the gun store as it is like getting a new suit. It needs to fit YOU. And every gun is different. One of them will feel good in your hand, be comfortable to carry, and fit your wallet. REMEMBER: Having no gun is bad, having even bad gun is good.
Blot-action rifles like .308 or .30-06 are for hunting deer and elk. They can also engage the enemy at hundreds of yards, provided you learn how to use them. It is a chore to get them sighted in, get the right ammo, etc... but it is rewarding and calming work to figure things out.
Semi-auto rifles like the AR-15 are for engaging lots of bad guys at the ~50-100 yard range. In other words, infantry combat. While you could hunt with them, it's generally designed for hunting mammals roughly about 4-7 feet tall and weighing 100-500 pounds. The chance of you EVER having to use an AR-15 in a real-life scenario? Unless you are a marine, probably close to 0.
Shotguns aren't very useful in combat (aside from clearing hallways or breaching doors), but you can use them to hunt ducks and birds and rabbits. They are also very intimidating for some reason. They are also a lot of fun. Get a 12-gauge for the man, 20-gauge for the woman and kids. These things KICK LIKE A MULE. Skeet shooting is one of my favorite things of all time, and trains all sorts of instincts that will help you shoot bad guys running and gunning at you.
Find a good gun store. The first words out of your mouth is, "I'm a complete newbie when it come to guns." Let the sales guy take his time with you, and be attentive and sincere. Ask a lot of stupid questions, and be prepared for nervous laughs as you start to learn the lingo. Be ready to drop $1k maybe $2k the first time you go in. You can probably get out with a good handgun and ammo and a holster for probably less than that, but it's good to be ready for the cost.
I think he means nobody talks like that. And asking where to find “groups ready to defend themselves” sounds spoopy. “evil people doing the election theft” sounds like “hello there fellow caterpillars”. It’s weird.
If you want to actually exercise your rights leave CA. Its a shithole full of unconstitutional commies, or don't and try and change it. Better hurry though shit looks like it might kick off real soon.
It's never too late. The best time was yesterday the second best is today. Sure prices aren't what they used to be but please get prepared no matter what people tell you.
Despite the late arrival to the issues, you probably should just get a home defense shotgun. The Remington 870 is a no brainer and inexpensive. Mossberg also makes a good shotgun for basic, entry level use.
As for groups, well, just let that ship sail. You aren’t ganging up with anyone and there’s no need. Plus, your angle is kinda skewed on reality in this respect.
If you’re not totally being coy, just realize you’re late to the party. Protect yourself, as you should have already been doing and keep your head down. Understand, you kinda sound duplicitous and it simply doesn’t fit the mold here. Expect to be hammered.
It is late in the game, but never too late (or at least it isn’t yet). As far as guns go, they are tools and different guns will serve different purposes. Cover the basics first. You need to be able to protect yourself and your home (family). Check out your local gun stores and find out what ammo is available RIGHT NOW. “Oh you’re out of everything except .45 ACP? OK, I’ll take as many boxes as you can sell me, and show me what you’ve got that will shoot this.” Or whatever it happens to be. There’s your handgun for personal protection. Next, a 12 gauge shotgun. Something simple and intuitive enough you could show your wife how to use it in 30 seconds if you were in a desperate situation. Fuck the AR whatever for now. Get there when you’re ready to get there. Focus on protecting your own first. As far as groups, I HIGHLY recommend finding a solid church community. If that’s not your thing, there are other ways. Network is critical though, do not neglect this. I don’t recommend trying to figure out a move in a panic. Pack some solid go-bags for your whole family and know where you’re going if it gets crazy, but be assured there are Patriots in every state in this union.
Get a shotgun the ammo is easier to find, you don't need a license often, they don't need the maintenance of other guns, and you don't need as much practice just learn to use and point it the right direction.
Ar 15 because it's easiest to use for first timers and multi-purpose. You can use it for many different applications. Antifa. BLM. Looney Vegans. All kidding aside, I love them I have two. Going to get a few more because I am already stocked on everything. Now is the time to buy whatever you can if you can. Don't go over board as you also need ammo and to plan for supplies etc. There is a sweet spot.
Strategic place to live. Away from cities. Look at the Red vs blue map of counties in the us. Find something close. You don't have to go to a remote location, a lot of good places are just a bit aways from a city and more rural then suburban.
I live in Colorado but I am in a red area.
Comms. Look at ham radio if you want to communicate
shortwave radio if you just want to listen in.
Stock food as much as you can and have a way to cook food that isn't tied to electricity. Ie. I stopped grilling so I can save that propane tank for if I need it in a pinch. I may get one more to be safe.
This can be shipped to your home no FFL required, just need a lower to go with it. I know you're from commiefornia so might need to remove that flash hider and swap out the pistol grip if you care about their unconstitutional gun laws.
CA assault weapon law is pretty rough, you should look up some cali complaint ar15s and see how ridiculous they look. You used to be limited to fixed mags or required to have a "bullet button" instead of a traditional mag release, and a maximum of 10 rounds. I am not sure if that's still the case so make sure you know before putting everything together.
Also you can shoot 223 in ARs chambered for 556 but usually not the opposite, due to 556 being a higher pressure round.
Right I heard only the lower receiver requires the FFL.
If you get an 80 percent lower you don't even need that. Although I think CA "requires" you to register any 80s before you complete them (and get a serial number). Also, I'd consider an AR10 instead, because 1) 308 seems to be a little more available than 223/556 and 2) If you're legally limited to 10 round magazines, you might as well have 10 more powerful rounds. Or you could get a 450 Bushmaster AR15. If you do decide to go the 80 percent lower route, know that not all AR10 parts makers are compatible with all AR10 lowers, so you have to do more homework before you build an AR10 than an AR15. At any rate I would suggest if you decide to build to start with an AR15.
The other thing is you could try looking at lever action rifles if you need a rifle right away. I'd look for something in 30-30, 44 magnum, or 45-70, depending on ammo availability. If a shotgun will do then I'd suggest a semi-auto or pump shotgun in 12 gauge (since buckshot and slugs are neigh impossible to find in the other calibers right now). But I'd look at one of those options if I needed a functional long arm immediately and getting a semi-auto rifle wasn't feasible.
PS Are the min-14 and mini-30 available in CA? If so you could try one of those, it would be almost as good as an AR15.
Playing minecraft is going to be real hard for this guy feelsbadman.
Also, if you work alone, then no one else can snitch on you.

No offensive, but you sound like a fed.

Depends on the state you live in.

Preaching to the choir.

I buy online https://www.budsgunshop.com and for ammo : ammoseek.com
Where to move depends on what you do for a living. But basically move to any red county in a red state as far out in the sticks as possible.
If you're looking for an AR-15, I'd recommend the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport II in .223/5.56.
It's both affordable, and it's a high quality rifle.
You can use this rifle for anything, including home defense. If you can ONLY have one gun, nothing is better. Don't let anyone tell you different.
http://www.grabagun.com usually has them in stock, but they are super overpriced right now.
What part of CA
