So while they had intended to fund, say, trade, education, art, engineering, etc. degrees, all of a sudden these weirdo commies come around and make up areas of study to pull as much funding from loans as possible, private and public.
It's like an over-inflated supply/demand scenario. The schools start offering these BS easily obtainable degrees, and the feds are legally obligated to support anyone who wants to go to college. So in order to support the program they have to raise prices and interest, as do the private loans.
One of two things is gonna happen: either the bubble bursts completely and the sharks can no longer afford to take on the debt of even a single student, or students stop having interest in going to college, learn skills online for cheap, and stop taking on burdens that will stop them from starting their lives. The latter is the only way the price of college loans can ever go down, and ideally in the midst these schools will cut programs that contribute nothing to society. At the end of the day they are a business, and if they notice that the gender studies majors aren't donating after graduating, they're gonna maybe think twice about useful a degree it is.

Yes, you're giving Microsoft money, but there are TONS of classes up there, from art to business and everything in between, and you get legitimate certificates you can post on your LinkedIn profile. $25/month. 4 years of that would cost you $1200 and you're loaded on certificates, while 4 years of college costs you $150,000 and you have a single BA you can't do anything with.

I am (or was until the Bat flu hit) a college instructor at a small local college as well as a part time instructor in the local school system...some of the salaries at both are disgustingly high for the tenured instructors and administrators (the non-tenured tend to work for peanuts, which is wrong). If the salaries were balanced out to a moderate and fair amount, the costs of operation would go down, and people would still make a very good wage for this area. If, for example, I could make 30-50K per year (working all year round), I'd not only be 1) overjoyed; 2) have a very modest yet very pleasant lifestyle with which anyone should be content. We have people making a lot more than that while the physical plant is constantly laying people off or cutting their hours (they run the buildings).

One of two things is gonna happen: either the bubble bursts completely and the sharks can no longer afford to take on the debt of even a single student, or students stop having interest in going to college, learn skills online for cheap, and stop taking on burdens that will stop them from starting their lives. The latter is the only way the price of college loans can ever go down, and ideally in the midst these schools will cut programs that contribute nothing to society. At the end of the day they are a business, and if they notice that the gender studies majors aren't donating after graduating, they're gonna maybe think twice about useful a degree it is.

Honestly, LinkedIn Learning. Yes, you're giving Microsoft money, but there are TONS of classes up there, from art to business and everything in between, and you get legitimate certificates you can post on your LinkedIn profile. $25/month. 4 years of that would cost you $1200 and you're loaded on certificates, while 4 years of college costs you $150,000 and you have a single BA you can't do anything with.
Funny how I remember a time when you didn't need to take out loans (or at least not these outrageously huge ones) to go to college...and it wasn't that long ago. It's almost like the availability of larger, unsecured loans drove up the cost....
PS. I am (or was until the Bat flu hit) a college instructor at a small local college as well as a part time instructor in the local school system...some of the salaries at both are disgustingly high for the tenured instructors and administrators (the non-tenured tend to work for peanuts, which is wrong). If the salaries were balanced out to a moderate and fair amount, the costs of operation would go down, and people would still make a very good wage for this area. If, for example, I could make 30-50K per year (working all year round), I'd not only be 1) overjoyed; 2) have a very modest yet very pleasant lifestyle with which anyone should be content. We have people making a lot more than that while the physical plant is constantly laying people off or cutting their hours (they run the buildings).

Promised high paying jobs and a good life if they went into massive debt. It was a scam and a lie perpetrated by some of the most privileged institutions on the planet. I think college loans should be forgiven for the students and payment for the loans should be taken from the college institutions that stole the money. I would also add student loans are the only form of debt in our society that can not have bankruptcy declared. Just letting the older pedes on here know because most donāt know what has happened with college, for the vast majority of my gen and the one below college is treated by schools, parents and even government as the next school after HS. Just Imagine the pressure you would have gotten if you tried to not do high school except now add big debt we canāt pay year. Reason I added gov for me if I didnāt immediately go to college with my scholarships I would have lost them and been 40k more in debt down the road. To those more established thatās not an insane amount, but to a 17 18 year old kid who probably never had more than a thousand dollars by this point that prospect alone forced me into to. Add to it schools treating it like it was just a thing you have to do if you even want to work at McDonaldās(actual lie I was told repeatedly growing up in school). Glad for those who managed to escape this trap I at least knew I wanted to go into programming and went to a more conservative Christian school so I at least came out fine. Still this system is a mess right now that really needs to be fixed and for the parents out there keep all this in mind so you can make sure college is something they actually want or can actually gain something from before trying to move them along to it like everybody else.

Repeal the 16th Amendment. "But muh pRogRaMs!" You mean all those financial responsibilities taken on by the federal govt that should be handled by the individual states? Let states handle them how they see fit. States are allowed an income tax without the 16th Amendment (unless their own state constitution prohibits it). It's completely absurd that a century ago state legislatures voted to allow money to be drained from their states to be sent elsewhere.
