The real ones were Essenes and rejected the name Jew as the Jews were corrupt. When Paul says we are the temple of God, this truth was/is a universal truth and has existed since the beginning. Thus, God never actually lived in the external Tabernacle/Temple system and never commanded literal animal sacrifice. The Essenes understood the allegorical nature of Scripture and how it is an expression of our inner composition. The Essenes followed Jesus and became known as the Ebionites. The Ebionites were rejected from both Judaism and Christianity and eventually killed off by the sword once Christians gained political power and turned from oppressed to oppressor.
