As someone who spent 2 weeks as a 12 year old so ill I could hardly get out of bed with the flu I can certainly see that. My dad oddly enough survived the Hong Kong flu in 1968 when he was 12 years old and he was much the same. He and my grandfather were so ill they couldn't walk to the shops 3 minutes from the front door after 10 days laid up with it.

Homeschooling mom here. We’ve definitely sacrificed by not having two incomes anymore BUT what our family has gained with me being home and the kids being homeschooled is well worth any monetary loss. They’re thriving and happy. I actually get to raise the kids the way my husband and I deem correct and teach them what we deem important.
I got forced into a one income household due to having two seriously unhealthy kids but damn it's hard. Your average American small town family needs at least $75k annually to live indoors, shop at Walmart, and keep the struggle to a minimum. Two incomes will meet that easily but your average Joe just ain't there. Try to get some understanding from an employer that you're starving due to life circumstances and they answer with tough shit. I will say that having the kids be in the first generation of online schooling (early 2000's) was the best thing ever.

I used to work with this old guy who was absolutely barking mad - come to find out he nearly died from the flu when he was 24 and serving in the army in Northern Ireland - in his case it became encephalitis. He spent days with a fever of 108 and was brain damaged as a result. Cool guy but he was mad as a hatter.

The summarized version is Manson was using strategies a CIA researcher on the MK Ultra project wrote were successful for brainwashing (a claim that was dropped from the article by the time it went before a congressional hearing and was only found because the researcher kept an original in his files at UCLA). That CIA researcher was working at the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic where Manson spent a great deal of time because his parole officer had an office there.
The parole officer was also tangentially connected to CIA cutout organizations if I remember correctly, and despite Manson continuously violating parole and being arrested multiple times, only ever wrote glowing reports about Manson and kept him out of prison.
There is a lot more information in there, like why they chose Polanski and Tate’s home, and how the CIA was running an operation to discredit the hippie movement and had embedded an operative close to the Manson family. It is a fascinating book and well worth a read.

I have 200 students and 53 minutes to prep my lessons for two daily lessons in two different subject areas, plus grading their actual work which is almost always essay based so they cant just fucking copypasta, but I'm a fucking beast in the classroom. With distance learning I'm doubly fucked bc my standards are what they should be for high school aged neurological development and I'm running kids down who are putting me on mute during lessons then cant do shit on the practice/assessments. But these are Americans and I won't give up on them. I'm working 65 hours a week, minimum.

All a parent needs to do past teaching a kid to read is monitor their progress and give e them as much access to books and vetted sources of info as possible.
That is mostly what I did. Limited computer, house full of books, had to learn to read, write and do math. Learn an instrument and do something physical, they chose martial arts. I spent a fraction of the time the schools do teaching and mine started college classes between age 13 and 15 depending on the kid. Bypassed high school altogether. Also for foreign language we moved to Mexico for a year and popped them in school. I had a really awful home life and when we lived in the country was very isolated, I cannot imagine what it would have been like. I used to think anyone could homeschool, then met some families who convinced me otherwise.
100%. Start with 100 Easy Lessons to Teach Your Child to Read when your kiddo is ready. Then fill your house with books. Get nonfiction and fiction. Read the books with your kids. Read books yourself when they're watching (big ask in the age of smartphones, but it's key). If a book is boring, don't force it on them. Let them choose when they're little. They will amaze you.

You’re correct. I do put about 10 extra hours a week to grade and make lessons. Being online now (which I don’t like, I want to be in person), it’s a little more effort because everything I do has to be made into a PowerPoint or Word document. I don’t get free periods because I hold a multiple subject credential. There are also about 3-4 hours a week for PL (professional learning) and PLC (professional learning communities) meetings. Those are pretty much a waste of my time. Do I like the union? No. I was given the option to opt out when I signed with my district. However, I didn’t because parents are crazy. If I get sued, I will have the union on my side (I hope). Also, it’s not always weekends off. I’ve spent many Saturdays in my room preparing and organizing. It’s not always summers off either. I’ve taught summer school for a few years now, and that’s about half of the 8 weeks I get off. All in all, there are hardworking teachers out there, but there are also a lot out there that give the good ones a bad rep.

I think you’re misunderstanding. I’m not saying that I work harder or am better than anyone else, and I didn’t call myself a hero. I’m saying that as a teacher, I put in effort and work for my students. I don’t think all teachers should be grouped together and seen as lazy or that we don’t do enough. I know plenty other teachers that work more than me. It would be like after reading your comment and reading that you’re in charge of 500 people. I bet that means that you’re probably pretty high up in your company. What if I assume that you sit behind a computer all day and talk on the phone and chat with your coworkers in the hallway and shoot the breeze all day? Easy peasy. At my son’s elementary school they had a custodian. He was probably one of the most talented employees at the school. He was more artistic than the art teacher. He would draw pictures of Yoda or other characters for students. He was more musical than the music teacher. He played in a pretty solid band that had gigs every weekend. He was more physical fit than the pudgy gym teacher...he was a really talented guy. Always thought it was funny how this guy was above and beyond in creativity and ability and worked as a custodian so he could have time to pursue those things he loved doing due to the hours.
There are definitely some vetflakes and thank me for my service types out there. But yeah. You mainly see mementos, badges, awards on vet desks and car windows. Not little sayings.
I retired from the navy in 2004. I don't have a single thing in my house hanging up. I have one hat I like to wear still for sweaty work or the gym. When I was in the military, I use to get annoyed with people coming up to me thanking me for my service. Sure it was nice, but I always replied that its what I volunteered to do and that I shouldn't be praised for it. Half the time when I wasn't deployed anywhere, I was sitting on my ass waiting for the next jet to land so I can service the engines.

I actually did become a teacher to teach. I like it. I believe I was called to be a teacher and God has put me at the school I’m at for a reason. And I will say, I’m very grateful for my janitor. I always smile and tell him thanks for keeping my room clean and that the work he does is important. It’s hard to talk with him though because he’s Hmong.

Homeschooling mom here. We’ve definitely sacrificed by not having two incomes anymore BUT what our family has gained with me being home and the kids being homeschooled is well worth any monetary loss. They’re thriving and happy. I actually get to raise the kids the way my husband and I deem correct and teach them what we deem important.
I don't think all people want that. It's just incredibly hard to have a sole income family anymore. Thank the boomers for that one.
I got forced into a one income household due to having two seriously unhealthy kids but damn it's hard. Your average American small town family needs at least $75k annually to live indoors, shop at Walmart, and keep the struggle to a minimum. Two incomes will meet that easily but your average Joe just ain't there. Try to get some understanding from an employer that you're starving due to life circumstances and they answer with tough shit. I will say that having the kids be in the first generation of online schooling (early 2000's) was the best thing ever.

He spent days with a fever of 108 and was brain damaged as a result. Cool guy but he was mad as a hatter.

He was possibly even more than an MK Ultra test subject. Read “Chaos Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the 60’s.” Joe Rogan had the author on. He spent something like 20 years researching it. He includes scans of some of the documents and several pages of resources.
The summarized version is Manson was using strategies a CIA researcher on the MK Ultra project wrote were successful for brainwashing (a claim that was dropped from the article by the time it went before a congressional hearing and was only found because the researcher kept an original in his files at UCLA). That CIA researcher was working at the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic where Manson spent a great deal of time because his parole officer had an office there.
The parole officer was also tangentially connected to CIA cutout organizations if I remember correctly, and despite Manson continuously violating parole and being arrested multiple times, only ever wrote glowing reports about Manson and kept him out of prison.
There is a lot more information in there, like why they chose Polanski and Tate’s home, and how the CIA was running an operation to discredit the hippie movement and had embedded an operative close to the Manson family. It is a fascinating book and well worth a read.
Manson's motivations were kind of convoluted.
He didn't tell them to loot and murder so he could profit.
The Tate murders were meant to be revenge for him since the guy that lived there before the Sharron Tate was in the Beach Boy's or was a producer for The Beach Boys and they kind of jacked one of Manson's songs and didn't credit him or pay him or anything. That REALLY pissed Manson off since he wanted to be a famous musician (he was actually a decent musician). When they fucked him over, he snapped and had his people go and kill everyone in the house as revenge (something about a guitar too, if I remember right?)
There's another angle that Manson was a horrible racist and was attempting to spark a race war. I don't know if Manson actually believed that or he just used that to convince his cult to do what he wanted them to do. He basically stoked their fears into violence. The world is collapsing, there's going to be a race war, the black man is going to beat the white man, but they won't be able to maintain anything the white man built so they'll collapse and die out. When that happens, the Manson family emerges from the desert as their very own hippy tribe of Israel to rebuild society. I don't think Manson actually believed that. I really don't. I think he used it to scare the shit out of his followers into doing what he wanted them to do.
I also think Manson just wanted the world to be as ugly as he felt inside. He wanted to visit his pain upon the world that he perceived persecuted him. And the world kinda did. He was a product of his environment. His mother was fucking awful. He never talked about his father much. What he did say was always consistent though. His image of his Dad was always very positive. His image of his grandparents also very positive. He put them on pedestals because they fought in World War 2. He really looked up to them for that. it ties into his race war angle. He saw it as his way to earn honor an respect maybe. To become a hero.

Some teachers are just robots that teach whatever lesson plan is shoved down their throats from the county and state level, but a lot really do put in 15-25 extra hours a week that's unpaid.
Because they don’t use their open periods during the school day to get their work done. All of the teachers I know (at least the public school ones) only teach 4/5 classes a day and have about 2 hours of free time a day for grading and planning, which they actually use for personal errands, going out to lunch with other teachers, having affairs with the gym teacher. Then they complain they have to take work home with them. I’m friends with these people. Don’t ask me why. Old college friendships die hard I guess.

I have 200 students and 53 minutes to prep my lessons for two daily lessons in two different subject areas, plus grading their actual work which is almost always essay based so they cant just fucking copypasta, but I'm a fucking beast in the classroom. With distance learning I'm doubly fucked bc my standards are what they should be for high school aged neurological development and I'm running kids down who are putting me on mute during lessons then cant do shit on the practice/assessments. But these are Americans and I won't give up on them. I'm working 65 hours a week, minimum.

When I was living in LA and homeschooling my kids, teachers at church would take me aside and quietly tell me I was doing the right thing, that parents had no idea how bad the schools were. Thanks for being that one teacher. I only had a few and they made a big difference. I would not have wanted to be homeschooled by my parents, they were raging alcoholics. Not everyone has that option.

That is mostly what I did. Limited computer, house full of books, had to learn to read, write and do math. Learn an instrument and do something physical, they chose martial arts. I spent a fraction of the time the schools do teaching and mine started college classes between age 13 and 15 depending on the kid. Bypassed high school altogether. Also for foreign language we moved to Mexico for a year and popped them in school. I had a really awful home life and when we lived in the country was very isolated, I cannot imagine what it would have been like. I used to think anyone could homeschool, then met some families who convinced me otherwise.

100%. Start with 100 Easy Lessons to Teach Your Child to Read when your kiddo is ready. Then fill your house with books. Get nonfiction and fiction. Read the books with your kids. Read books yourself when they're watching (big ask in the age of smartphones, but it's key). If a book is boring, don't force it on them. Let them choose when they're little. They will amaze you.

You’re correct. I do put about 10 extra hours a week to grade and make lessons. Being online now (which I don’t like, I want to be in person), it’s a little more effort because everything I do has to be made into a PowerPoint or Word document. I don’t get free periods because I hold a multiple subject credential. There are also about 3-4 hours a week for PL (professional learning) and PLC (professional learning communities) meetings. Those are pretty much a waste of my time. Do I like the union? No. I was given the option to opt out when I signed with my district. However, I didn’t because parents are crazy. If I get sued, I will have the union on my side (I hope). Also, it’s not always weekends off. I’ve spent many Saturdays in my room preparing and organizing. It’s not always summers off either. I’ve taught summer school for a few years now, and that’s about half of the 8 weeks I get off. All in all, there are hardworking teachers out there, but there are also a lot out there that give the good ones a bad rep.

I think you’re misunderstanding. I’m not saying that I work harder or am better than anyone else, and I didn’t call myself a hero. I’m saying that as a teacher, I put in effort and work for my students. I don’t think all teachers should be grouped together and seen as lazy or that we don’t do enough. I know plenty other teachers that work more than me. It would be like after reading your comment and reading that you’re in charge of 500 people. I bet that means that you’re probably pretty high up in your company. What if I assume that you sit behind a computer all day and talk on the phone and chat with your coworkers in the hallway and shoot the breeze all day? Easy peasy. At my son’s elementary school they had a custodian. He was probably one of the most talented employees at the school. He was more artistic than the art teacher. He would draw pictures of Yoda or other characters for students. He was more musical than the music teacher. He played in a pretty solid band that had gigs every weekend. He was more physical fit than the pudgy gym teacher...he was a really talented guy. Always thought it was funny how this guy was above and beyond in creativity and ability and worked as a custodian so he could have time to pursue those things he loved doing due to the hours.

When I was in the military, I use to get annoyed with people coming up to me thanking me for my service. Sure it was nice, but I always replied that its what I volunteered to do and that I shouldn't be praised for it. Half the time when I wasn't deployed anywhere, I was sitting on my ass waiting for the next jet to land so I can service the engines.
If you see a Marine or US ARMY soldier, thank them for their service. They are the ones getting shot at, not Air Force or Navy.
I actually did become a teacher to teach. I like it. I believe I was called to be a teacher and God has put me at the school I’m at for a reason. And I will say, I’m very grateful for my janitor. I always smile and tell him thanks for keeping my room clean and that the work he does is important. It’s hard to talk with him though because he’s Hmong.

I investigated over 30 teachers in one small school system when in was a cop. For some reason the cucky men who teach now liked 14 yo girls. I guess they couldn't get a date in h.s.
There was a math teacher in my high school who use to bring a digital camera to school to take pictures of girls in the hallway. He said it was for a scrap book he making, which we all knew was a BS excuse.

Prius is a fantastic beater car. They're ugly as shit so you don't care if it gets keyed or bumped. They're under 5 grand for an old used one with about 100k miles. They can fit a dish washer in the back and get about 40mpg while you haul like a pickup

If it were not for this I would be absolutely terrified that teachers like this are teaching my child. Do not get me wrong, raising an autistic child is not easy, but this is not one of the problems, at least not for me.
Autistic people tend to question things because they need to know how they work in order to contextualize them and apply them in their mind. Get a full grasp of something, because a partial image will have a higher chance of being a wrong image. When points are off but close, and the whole picture is there, the idea still gets across. Picasso's portraits are still clearly people, even if the shape, color, and even location of things are off, and likewise, with a communication-related disability, if you can get a full picture, you'll present a clear picture of your aimed subject even if you have trouble putting it all on paper.
Honestly, it's something we should encourage in more kids. Kids ask "why". And the answer should always be "let's find out together." Reward asking why, questioning even the basic facts, and it will be much harder for someone to pull the wool over their eyes.
Because "why?", one word, asked repeatedly down a chain, destroys 95% of subversion and ideological dogma.
Why do I support Trump? I can answer: He objectively brings a lot of peace to the world via a half-dozen multi-country peace treaties. Why do I like that? I can answer "why" all day long. And if I hit a point where I don't know, I'll have some introspection and investigation, we can find out together. But as soon as dogma is involved, subversive elements, the "why" chain breaks down. "because I was told to, and now I'm telling you to, too" will be the eventual answer.
