But were they right? Because if they were then clearly whatever method they used to predict what it looked like was legitimate.

A better illustration of what you're saying is iguanodon. When first reconstructed in the early 1800s, they stuck its thumb on its nose and thought it looked like a giant iguana. With more complete fossils, they stood them up and then later stooped them down.

The take home of all this is that you should never trust a scientist.
