Because all politicians do it. R's and D's alike. Look at their families and just see how many got cozy jobs, college placements, political office appointments, book and public speaking deals despite never having done anything noteworthy, etc. Every one of them is for sale, and they take the money and funnel it through their family to avoid notice.

"Oh, that's not a bribe. I didn't get any of that money. It all went to the charity that my wife runs. Well, yes, the charity does use 90% of all donations to pay 'administrative costs', and yes, my wife and kids are the administrators, but it totally wasn't a bribe".
