haven't dived in yet but i just picked up a couple of brian killmeade's. jefferson and the tripoli pirates and george washington's secret six.
just finished 'the 5000 year leap' which was really good.
Not history, but C.S. Lewis' "The Abolition of Man" and "The Screwtape Letters" were two of the best books I read this year. People think of Lewis as just the guy who wrote the Narnia books, but he was was an incredibly well-read theologian who wrote extensively about morality, ethics, Christianity, and good vs. evil.
