Technically speaking, the only hard date that matters is the day a president is sworn in. There's precedent for shifts happening up to that point, but they get rarer and rarer the closer it gets. SCOTUS has cases where they have made both single and multi-state rulings on election shenanigans, so it's not like this has never happened before.
