It's so that they can stroke their egos. They finally have something they feel like they can be a part of, and feel like they're doing good, without actually having to actually do anything. Kind of like in the 90's when there was a massive push to recycle everything, people were acting the same way.

I remember that shit. Reduce reuse recycle.

Despite how recycling ended up making more of a carbon imprint and use of energy and resources than simply tossing it and making a new one. But whoever was making money recycling sure didnt mind

Likely that was the real reason behind it all, to create a whole new industry, and in some cases new taxes, like CRV in Kalifornia. It's amazing how inefficient recycling is.
