If you're looking to start a career, big cities are better than smaller towns in many ways although small cities can still offer great opportunities for growth and experience.
I've seen truckers, welders and even a few construction workers make 6 figures. And then I've seen actuaries and computer programmers make barely above poverty level.
So yeah, I know that high tech jobs aren't the only way to make a decent living.
