Since each book has an entertaining plot and story, it is this that keeps the reader intrigued. The occult messages either attract or repel readers, depending on where their morals lean. It's no secret leftists are morally bankrupt, which is why they like Harry Potter so much, since it combines the draw of a good story with their own attraction to evil.
I think it has something to do with the really simple good/bad analogies and the fact that magic was a popular story telling element at the time. Harry Potter being so many books meant the publisher and producers could drag out both formats for as much money as possible.
