China is a 5000 year old civilization that implodes every few decades or centuries, typically because the Chinese leadership is more interested in enjoying the myriads of pleasures this world has to offer or they go off on some batshit ideology, rather than focusing on good management.
A big part of why China is able to put itself together again is the geography. The Yellow River basin and the Yangtze River basin are the most productive agricultural regions in the world. Also, outside of the rivers themselves, few naturally fortifiable positions in these basins prevent reconsolidation.
Assuming there is no external power taking over or supporting one of the parties (Hi Mongols, or in the PRC case USSR + Japan)... After China falls apart, the rulers of these basins have a lot of manpower thanks to how productive this region is when things are stable-ish. They will then consolidate these these two areas, then using the massive manpower and resources, subjugate the rest of what the Han call "China." Generally stopping when the limits of communication and logistics prevent maintaining a subordinate government or shipping supplies from this region.
This continues until the leadership starts getting corrupt or runs into the limits of communications and logistics. China turns inwards to prevent "foreign corrupting influence and dangerous ideas". And either implodes due to internal politics or an external power taking advantage of the States weakness.
And we start the cycle again.
