Those rules for Christianity were formed before 'courtship' was even a thing. When the process of marriage involves more haggling with the parents than talking to the future spouse, makes sense not to have sex.

But given how radically different modern coupling is, the sex rule makes very little sense now.

Young people 'dating' as a cultural practice - was that the left pushing that in US?

Far as I know it was normalized in America in the 50s. (and was followed by a decade of loosening morals)
