When I was 11 my family moved from my birth state of KY. That year we also stayed a month in Ontario Canada due to my dad’s job. In a public women’s bathroom there, we saw someone had scrawled “Yankee go home!!” and I thought to myself, Wow, the Canadians can’t stand Northerners, either! Even my mom didn’t know until long after this that people outside US refer to all US citizens as Yankees.

In my 20s I read a Readers Digest piece that foreigners call those of the US “Yankees” while to Southerners that name means someone from the North. But to someone from the North, a Yankee means someone from New England. And to those of New England a Yankee means someone from Vermont. And to someone from Vermont a Yankee is someone who still uses an outhouse/doesn’t have indoor plumbing.
