People have a bad perception of it due to the constant bombardment of propaganda since the 90s to justify war in the middle east and funded terrorist activities by the the last few presidents. We even had movies here depicting them as such which is further brainwashing. People don't know the difference between sunni and shia let alone the geographic locations of any of the countries that practice it.
Most people also think arabs in the desert is what what a muslims are. There are Japanese muslims, Indonesians, americans.etc
They dont know muslims. When they get to know them outside of US military adventures, they usually chill TF out and realize Islam is a huge umbrella that spans many many different places on earth and like all human endeavors that size has both the best and worst of human nature on display.
