I don't blame people. Legal language and procedure is complicated, and anything involving the supreme court seems to add on to it.

I still don't know if filing an amicus brief is the same thing as "joining the lawsuit".

Are these states plaintiffs too now, or did they just gave a letter of support?

They aren't plaintiffs; but they are lending their services and support to the plaintiff... I think. I read somewhere that you can't "join" a SCOTUS case; so this might be the best they can do.
