Last Sunday, I just went to church after 25 years spent as an atheist. I feel it in my bones that this is a fight for good and evil.I’ve started praying for the protection of everyone fighting the legal fight, and the truth tellers But I really don’t know where to begin. My wife is catholic, but we both think the Pope is a bad dude. (When we want to say “I don’t know” to each other, we ask “is the pope catholic?”)
I went to a non denom church that was basically a live concert, which I didn’t like. But the sermon was good. I liked the pastor, but this style is really not for me. Like I said, I need advice.
The "concert" churches are trying desperately to get people in the pews. The substance (or lack thereof) in the sermon is what's important. Don't give up, keep looking. Try to find out if there's a local BSF group in your community. Check out mybsf.org
Click on a user name, then when you see all their posts click on the three bars in the upper right corner. Then you should see that users post and comment score. Directly under that it says “send message”. That’s how you PM.
Pastor and sermon are the most important. If those are good then you may grow more comfortable with the style. Church is meant to be a hospital for sinners, not a museum of saints. Music is a form of therapy for some, and a sense of peace can be felt when you are ready to allow yourself to be a conduit in the moment.
You've made the most important first steps on your own, I pray for your heart to be guided the rest of the way. God bless!
I think you've got the right idea with unaffiliated churches. Each is supposed to be independent. to limit the corruption man inevitably brings. Keep looking until you find one that just does what the Bible says.
If you're looking for some satisfying sermons - I can wholeheartedly recommend Adrian Rogers (Love Worth Finding). You can find his podcasts with any podcast app: https://podcastindex.org/podcast/827651
Don't forget the baptism part! Be buried with Christ.
Acts 2: 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
My grandpa served in the Army as a Lieutenant during WW2. Lost many of his friends. He was in a fox hole one night in Ardenne Forrest during the battle of the bulge when he rededicated his life to Christ. He made a covenant with God, that if God were allow him to return home alive he would serve Him for the rest of his life. Long story short he survived and was eventually transferred away from the front as things wound down. He honored his promise till the day he died. He was a great man.
I’m 31 and have strayed from my faith for a long time. Have lived an imperfect life to say the least. All I want now is to have my country back, to serve God, and my country. Thats it. It had to take until this point, with our country in the balance, for me to realize that. And now I fear it may be too late. This country is facing a spiritual crisis, and I can’t help but feel that my wickedness over the last four years and beyond has contributed to the situation we are in.
Our founders, made a covenant with God when they founded this country. They are pleading with God for this country to be spared. That their efforts not go wasted. I believe God wants to use Trump for a second term to carry out His plan. I believe He wants to extend His grace for this country and for those of us who were led astray spiritually so that we may return united, one nation under God. To be the shining light that does away with the evil in this world.
I have recently reconnected with my faith and am praying very hard for the first time in years for this country like a lot of others. I pray that we get this right and God is allowed to fulfill His promise. That we may return to our roots as the founders intended this country to function. I pray we learn from our mistakes and are forgiven for our wickedness. That we never stray from our path again and learn to put God first as a country again. That we all may be united as brothers and sisters in Christ.
And some will tell you what you want to hear, but the only thing that matters is what God says. Some versions of the bible even remove words, which is surprising considering the risk their taking.
If God cares about us, why does he let things like famine and genocide occur? Also, since certain Christians believe things differently, will one denomination of them go to Hell? (Think Roman Catholic Vs. Protestant Vs. Eastern Orthodox)
He is God. He is Messiah. He came down to earth and was born as a man, lived a perfect life and then died a horrifying death and then 3 days later, rose from the grave alive. Why? So that we might be forgiven of our sin and when we die, will spend eternity in heaven with Him.
Then you've yet to experience Him and thats alright. Prayer is a necessity, it is the oxygen between you and from God. To take Jesus in, you need to know He is who He claims. You find that out in prayer with Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you and make a real effort to find and get to know Him.
I am praying for President Trump everyday and Sidney,Rudy and Lin and the Judges that are hearing these cases.I also ask God to use this episode in our history to lead the US into another great revival of faith in Jesus Christ. If President Trump is inaugurated on Jan 20th it will be because of Gods will and I hope everyone here sees that.Every office of government and media is turned against him.
If the USA does not return to Gods will then 4 more years of President Trump will not help us.
We likely share nearly all the same values. I just don’t believe in Divinity. If we were neighbors I would go to church with you, and pray, especially in such dire times.
When Jesus was on the cross two criminals were next to him. One asked for salvation before death. He was told by Jesus he would go to Heaven. Point I’m making? It’s never too late.
Luke 23:40-43
I accepted God into my life nearly ten years ago now, but I've always struggled deeply with it. I just never really felt close to Him, and been plagued with doubt all the time, like my flaws just keep me from ever really getting close. I've sinned a lot since then, and i always feel awful about it and try to improve, then fail to do so.
I genuinely worry about it a lot. Especially since now it feels like I woke up to some insanity straight out of Revelations with the Covid Vaccines and such. I'll say that I've prayed over it, and kind of have accepted that either this is the Big Dance, or it isn't, and either way I've got to trust God with it. But it's really hard to hold onto that faith in the face of all these things.
Well, if this is it, then I hope to meet you guys on the other side. I regret lurking so long without joining in until now. Literally just made this account to join in this conversation.
I haven't read my Bible in too long. I'm gonna have to get back on that tonight.
Don't let sin keep you from getting closer to Jesus.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Also, God is in control
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus
My point is that we all sin, don't feel that you can't be close to God because you've messed up in the past. Know that if you ask God to forgive, you are washed clean, spotless in His sight, guiltless. God invites you to have a fresh start whenever you want. Truly unconditional love.
I grew up in a cult so it is hard for me to accept. I love good people in general tho (don't hate me because I don't believe in JC just understand I don't like hypocrites).
I'm a born and Raised teenage Christian who has had... shaky beliefs in God. Like, I know he exists and all, but if he cared about us, then why would he allow things like the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, The persecution of Ughyurs in China, and all the other horrible things in this world to occur? I want to believe in Him, and i do for the most part, but it's hard, ya know?
PREACH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How sweet the gift of salvation freely given to all when we deserve less than 0 from the RIGHTEOUS KING himself, ALPHA OMEGA, CREATOR OF ALL THINGS. Thankful everyday, what a great post!
No kidding, reading here on TDW and learning about the abject evil we are fighting (Epstein, etc.) has brought me closer to God and renewed my faith. God bless you, frens. 🙏🏻🇺🇸
Those are people who have turned their backs on the Lord and the word of God. They don't speak for him. Just as our government hasn't truly spoken for us in a LONG time. Usurpers and traitors taking over a host system/country and turning it against us. I can't tell someone what to believe, it's up to them. The pope is indeed, a communist. I'm a Christian and have never paid any mind to what the pope says. I read my Bible and pay my tithes. It's people, we're humans. We are flawed and make mistakes. Some are honest mistakes and some are misleading snakes in the grass looking to lead you astray. This pope is a snake imo.
Im not going to recommend a denomination just find a church that preaches the scripture and not the pastors opinions....the scripture should be the bulk and basis of the sermons...they should be guiding you through the text and giving some historical context and elaboration on the themes but not using the scripture in a minimal way and then using the rest of the time to spout off their opinion on the flavor of the month..trust me its more common than you realize
Believed in GOD my whole life that I can remember. Even when I had questions about some things I always believed there was a higher power that I hope to haves approval. That said I've never been a very religious man my relationship has always been with GOD directly not via a church. The last 2 years its been getting more intense, both in intensity, trust, faith, and resolve. I've accepted that my life was a gift, if my gift must be forfeit so that the gift I was given can be given to another so be it. For GOD whom has given me everything, I will give anything, even if its the gift given to me. I hope I do not die as I'd like to enjoy this gift further but I will not allow this gift to be snuffed out so that I can live in an evil world. I'd rather be back with my Lord than to be in Hell on Earth.
I have no fear, there are things I don't want to do, but I do understand we are here and I did get trained even if not formally. I'm ready, I understand we are where we are and I've before told my Mother as much so I'm ok to give my life for our Lord!
Evidence of Jesus having been alive doesn't = evidence of the whole Bible being true... Also the evidence they gave is very weak... I could give you better evidence of Jesus having been real and I would still tell you all religion is bullshit...

Honestly, I was thinking Greek Orthodoxy. A bit left field, I know, but am curious to see.
I've been to the local one, but they actually were speaking Greek, which as they say, was all Greek to me

Its hard for somebody who grew up with liturgy to go with contemporary protestant worship...
Good thing is there are tons of options. Try a Lutheran denomination
Based on your background, I suggest trying a conservative liturgical Lutheran church. Here's how to find one: https://www.lutheranliturgy.org/
Hey pede, so glad to see you here :)

I say that in my heart everyday for 22 years now.
There is a group who's stated mission is to make good men better men. Its helped me a lot imho.
My grandpa served in the Army as a Lieutenant during WW2. Lost many of his friends. GEOTUS is GEOTUS, but Jesus is GEOGE. Bless you pede.
"How did you come to faith?"
"TD post by a guy called 'bernieatemyshorts'."
😂 God bless, brother.
Just choose the church and the pastor carefully — lots have gone “woke” unfortunately.
And some will tell you what you want to hear, but the only thing that matters is what God says. Some versions of the bible even remove words, which is surprising considering the risk their taking.
Christ is at the door. His return imminent. Accept his free offer of salvation and inclusion in his Kingdom.
Thanks but no thanks.
I certainly respect the effort though. Regardless, religious freedom is religious freedom. It's what we fight for!
Stay true to your faith, Patriot. All of us coming together from many creeds is what makes us stronger.
Not all of us need to throw our beliefs out there. Hey, at least you are playing the burn in hell card.
The way through God is Jesus. The alternative is...
I'll just keep being the good me, and if I go to hell for that, Heaven isn't up to my standards.
If God cares about us, why does he let things like famine and genocide occur? Also, since certain Christians believe things differently, will one denomination of them go to Hell? (Think Roman Catholic Vs. Protestant Vs. Eastern Orthodox)

Not for me but I’ll stand with you guys to the end.

When Jesus was on the cross two criminals were next to him. One asked for salvation before death. He was told by Jesus he would go to Heaven. Point I’m making? It’s never too late. Luke 23:40-43
What did the other ask for?
He mocked Jesus. The other didn’t. One is in heaven with our Father. The other....not my place to say.
May I suggest Dr Charles Stanley. He is bible centered and he really hits you in the heart
Amen! I love Dr. Stanley. Anyone can hear him speak at https://www.intouch.org/

I haven't read my Bible in too long. I'm gonna have to get back on that tonight.
Thankfully my GF has been much better about keeping the faith than I have. She's about to finish Haggai, and start Zechariah. She'll keep me honest.
After that it's the Gospels again, so I'll keep you in mind while I'm reading them.
I’m in the exact same place! I’m finishing Haggai this week as well. Never realized how great these minor prophets’ books were. Minor only in length!
Don't let sin keep you from getting closer to Jesus.
Also, God is in control
Like I said, I try to be better, I just fail every time. I don't stop trying.
And I've made peace with whatever comes next at this point. I trust in God that it's all going how He plans it.
My point is that we all sin, don't feel that you can't be close to God because you've messed up in the past. Know that if you ask God to forgive, you are washed clean, spotless in His sight, guiltless. God invites you to have a fresh start whenever you want. Truly unconditional love.

Amen. God will use what the enemy meant for evil and turn it to good. That's been the master's strategy for a long time.
I love Jesus, he mows my yard.
I love this community.
This year seems to inspire everyone to turn to religion. I bought various study bibles to see if I could find reason to believe. We will see.
A good book to read is The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel
I second that. There’s a movie too
I'm a born and Raised teenage Christian who has had... shaky beliefs in God. Like, I know he exists and all, but if he cared about us, then why would he allow things like the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, The persecution of Ughyurs in China, and all the other horrible things in this world to occur? I want to commend you on your effort in explaining all this bro. True disciple!
Agreed!
Did many years ago. Not religious but just love God and His son.

The pope is a man, he doesn't represent God. You should not lose your faith over the actions of another man. Your relation with Jesus is personal.
This is the most important post I've seen on TDW! There is no truth more important than this.
I'm good. Thanks for the thought.
King of kings, Lord of lords.
He's got this.
AMEN!!!
This is the only way to win a war against evil.
Amen
Amen
I have never walked into a church in my life and I don't plan to, but don't stop going yourself because of anyone elses opinion
It costs nothing to accept Christ and be wrong, but costs your eternal soul if you reject Him. Take the leap of faith! You'll never regret it.
And all Gods people said.......
Believed in GOD my whole life that I can remember. Even when I had questions about some things I always believed there was a higher power that I hope to haves approval. God is with us- but are WE with God?
Let us turn our hearts to heim as a Nation, that he may heal our land and
Deliver Us From Evil!
I agree with alll of this.
I’m a heretic by most Christian standards. More Spiritual than anything.
But God is real. This is a fight of Good vs Evil. Jesus is Good. Pray. Fight. Win. Let’s go.
Yes he does.
No. Don't care for fairy tale worship. Stick to reality!
Yea I don't believe in fairy tales.
You will
Highly doubt it.
Zero evidence and lots of contradictions. I do however look at the Bible as a history book and it's quite interesting the amount of things in there
Zero evidence? LOL. A lot more evidence than BANG oops, "oh look- life!"
That makes no sense.
Just keep reading. Lots of interesting stories. And I'm willing to bet if you keep it up it will change your life.
I've read the whole thing twice that's what made me become an atheist...
The main thing about Christianity is that it is a copy of a copy of a copy of a fraud.
Evidence of Jesus having been alive doesn't = evidence of the whole Bible being true... Also the evidence they gave is very weak... I could give you better evidence of Jesus having been real and I would still tell you all religion is bullshit...
An element of hope and fairy tale beliefs... Yes
Contradictions are resolved by context, and there's a mountain of evidence.
