In the world of sports, an umpire or referee makes a "call" and that decision is final.

The media "calling" an election isn't like that at all; it has no official status and no one is required to obey them.
But they use the same word from the sporting world so that people will be falsely led to believe that the media's "call" has some kind of legitimacy or status.
