I don't think many people realize today how brutal being tarred and feathered was. Doubly so in an age without modern medicine.

This one historicals.

The point was to get the tar sticky enough to hold the feathers and be a real nuisance to clean off, not kill somebody.

Pretty sure you don't want it boiled. Just liquid which happens at a much lower temperature

Tar is likely to catch fire long before it gets that hot. It does contain some volatile materials.
