The United States of America has more of a claim to Taiwan than the People's Republic of China (PRC) ever did, by defeating the Japanese in WW2. I would say even the Dutch and Spanish have more of a claim to island of Formosa (Taiwan) than the Chicoms as it was once colonized by them.
The USA (and her allies) gave the island ceded by Japan, to the Republic of China (ROC), not the PRC.

Unsure of the reference, CCP overthrew the ROC after WW2, when the ROC was depleted from fighting in the war.
Except the CCP were so inept, they were unable to wipe out the ROC and they fled to Taiwan.
