As someone who ... lived through it.... If you look at Clinton policies and positions, it's really not that far of from what the GOP is today. The Libs have gone radical.
Here's what I noticed, in 2015, gay 'marriage' became legal. When this happened Republicans moved more center right, the Dems moved more far left. This was both a good thing for the GOP and a bad thing cause it was the start of the 'what do conservatives really conserve?' question. It was sort of the start of the Ben Shapiro 'Why can you kill me in a death camp but I can't kill you' type 'conservatives'. BUT at the same time I do see this as being the turning point for us to elect Trump. If you actually look at Trump as a person prior to 2015 he truly was the moderate candidate. He was the reasonable 'I want to preserve America' candidate but because the left was moving so far communist, simply saying 'I'd like America to exist' was alt-right-neo-nazi-Hitler speak. And because of this, Trump was able to draw in a sizable amount of moderates and classical liberals. It's no longer Bible belt preacher farmer evangelicals from Georgia vs homosexual artist abortion doctors from San Francisco, it's turned into non-crazy people vs Commies.

My opinion only, not to be mistaken for fact.
