I wouldn't necessarily say they're stupid, but it definitely exposes how weak their hand really is when their only responses sound "stupid" (because they are).
It's like the defense attorney saying his client is innocent because his parents spanked him when he was a kid. Yeah, that's nice and all but it doesn't change what you did.

It’s more like getting in trouble for skipping school but then arguing that you shouldn’t get into trouble because you didn’t start the fight.
