It's not as bad as you think it is, and the traditional characters are actually easier to remember than the 'simplified' ones, because they preserve phonetic elements that the simplified ones eliminate.
I realize this doesn't make any sense to you if you've never tried studying any of the Chinese languages (or Japanese), but it's true. It's a tough slog but it's no worse than memorizing the crazy spelling that some English words have :)
I study Chinese as a non-native speaker (I'm Danish) and it's really not that bad, especially the traditional characters.
Basically there's about 105 building blocks. Each character is a syllable, and usually 1-3 words form a word, with 4 often being ancient figures of speech still in use.
Sounds like a lot of characters until you notice that English has 26 letters times two, which is 52, plus numerals that's 63. It is almost twice as many, true, but it's not insurmountable.
The building blocks are things like fire, ice, tree, ground, water, horse, pig, roof, field, moon, sun, woman, work, thunder, middle, above, below, numbers 1-10 etc. etc.
Some characters stand alone because you want to describe what the character means. Moon just means moon, tree just means tree, simple as that.
Other characters encode meaning. Two trees is the woods, three trees is the forest. Sun and moon is bright (2000 year old characters), a woman and a child is good, hiding in grass on the fields and among the pigs in the sty is a cat, a home is near where animals are kept with a roof over your head, love is to show appreciations via actions from your heart, a man goes to field to lend is strength, and on and on it goes.
Some encode pronunciation. For instance, the question particle (basically equivalent to ", right?") is a mouth and a horse, because the sound is like horse, and it has something to do with your mouth - asking questions.
Chinese is actually an incredibly beautiful culture and its writing system is a lot easier than it looks. It's just too bad the communists decided to kill most of the culture, destroy half the monuments, and simply the characters into nonsense. Nobody really knows how many building blocks there are in simplified Chinese. It's quite arbitrary.
