I think you’re missing the nuisance between appointed electors and electors states send. You are saying states “appoint” electors when they send them to vote. Majority of “appointed” refers to the amount of electors that are assigned (read: appointed) to the states. Whether the states sends the electors or not doesn’t change total of assigned (read: appointed) electors. And SCOTUS wouldn’t change it as it is clearly defined.
