One of the "explain like i'm 5" explanations about why the coronavirus is not man made is that if you imagine the mutations of the virus as a mosaic, you would be looking at a colorful mosaic, meaning that mutations have been occurring at random rather than intentionally made in a lab. First does this analogy make sense? Second, after hearing that I wonder If I want to make a virus and I don't want scientists to figure out it was made in a lab, could I just take a coronavirus from an animal or something that has already mutated many times naturally and then just make a small change so it infects humans? Would we still see the same mosaic overall?
