I think it's pretty clear why the GOP hasn't supported him in this fight.
They are preceding from two premises:
Trump is "unstable, uncontrollable, dangerous" etc
GOP voters who support Trump really are just whipped up in an anti-Democrat frenzy
Their goal, therefore, is to dump Trump, prop up a Jeb-like loser, then stoke the "don't let the Democrats win!" fires in order to get their boy---soft, controllable, milquetoast---into power so they can steer things toward the globalist way as they see fit, as opposed to how the Democrats see fit.
What they fail to understand is:
Trump is not unstable or dangerous. He is uncontrollable, that's true. They can't bend him to their will because he doesn't answer to them; he answers to America. Which takes us to...
GOP voters support Trump, yes because Democrats are evil, but also because Trump keeps his promises. We've known Democrats were evil, and we went along with Mitt and McCain and W and W and Dole and HW. We've been burned by GOPe for too long. Democrats are evil, and we look at the GOPe as people more than happy to let evil prosper. Trump fights, and for that we fight for him.

I would disagree that Trump isn't dangerous. He is definitely dangerous to commies.
