US soldiers don't experience this kind of war as a participant most of the time. The CIA does though. They usually do things like specialise in training Islamic extremists in asymmetric warfare. The US military would have a very hard time fighting a war in the USA the same as it might abroad. An example is that US lives are normally the priority. If something looks hairy just call in air support and blow it to high heaven. Collateral abroad doesn't really register that much on the public conscience.
The most manageable scenario might be if a state secedes then raises its own militias for defence with the states significant command and control structure in place. It may first have to capture local pockets of insurgency.
Urban combat is a potential nightmare. Any force can end up entangled even an experienced one. The collateral is a real problem I pointed out earlier. You can end up also inflicting stuff on your people. There might be ways around that but it's not necessarily easy. A huge amount depends on the lay of the land.
Hit and runs they might not be able to so easily stop you. It may be more difficult to do that with marshal law.
If it reaches the point of extremes though there are targets you can hit to inflict maximum damage. To a fair degree the Pentagon already has all of these listed though total coverage can be difficult. Some avenues of attack may be very difficult to avoid.
A city isn't going to be captured by a small force. It would take a substantial militia to achieve that. It's a difficult prospect but if pulled off you have a very nasty hostage situation on your hand. It means being prepared to be besieged though including things like night vision because they'll cut the power. Also making booby traps, etc.
If you want nothing but maximum destruction or scorched Earth.
Another strategy you should have already been doing is running regular drills and marches rather than waiting for the moment to assemble and be prepared.
